Borde Room Entertainment, a Seabrook-based independent artist network and management company is proud to announce the Second Annual Spring Break Music Unity Freedom Festival. This festival will be held on Porretto Beach in Galveston, Texas durring Spring Break, St. Patricks Day, and SXSW, on March 16th, 17th, and 18th. Over 30 bands and DJs on 2 stages will be collaborating to offer a variety of genres for all types of music lovers, such as reggae, rock, bluegrass, folk, hip hop, dub step, electronic, and more. In addition to the live music there will be a large variety of vendors offering food, beverages, crafts, and activities, and we are excited to announce that camping will be allowed!!!

This one-of-a-kind event was a first for Spring Break in Galveston last year in 2011, offered by the community, for the community. Porretto Beach is clean and beautiful, centrally located, and privately owned. It is one of the few beaches that can offer alcoholic beverages, finally allowing the spring breakers and partygoers a better option than driving down to South Padre. This will give them a space to gather on the sand and have a blast enjoying the concerts, camping, surf, and sunshine!

Musicians are being confirmed and booked everyday and will be announced soon!

All local businesses that take the opportunity to be a part of this highly anticipated event will join in its financial success. There are vendor spaces available, ranging in size from 10×10 to 50×50 for an affordable sponsorship fee. Borde Room Entertainment will be happy to talk to vendors and sponsors in the following areas: food, beverages, arts and crafts, health and wellness, sports and activities, entertainment, clothing and merchandise, organizations, special interests groups, and more.

1) Mission Statement

THROUGH COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND TEAMWORK, WE WILL PROVIDE A FAMILY FRIENDLY OUTDOOR EVENT THAT ENCOURAGES RESPONSIBLE FUN AND THE EXPRESSION OF FREEDOM, MUSIC, ART AND KNOWLEDGE.

In other words, why does this festival need to happen?

• It promotes community involvement and teamwork to create an event that the community actually wants.
• So people can exercise their rights to have responsible fun while working together to make a successful event.
• To provide Galveston and its surrounding communities with a family friendly, outdoor event during Spring Break and St. Patrick’s Day.
• To provide local artists, independent musicians, and touring acts with the opportunity to perform and display their art for the large crowds on the beach.
• So guests have the chance to use their voice and share their knowledge

2) History

In 2011, Borde Room Entertainment, a Seabrook based network of musicians and artists realized there was a void to be filled. After experiencing the famous SXSW music festival in Austin as independent Texas musicians, they felt that it no longer was for the local and independent musicians, but had turned into an event for the “big guys” including large record labels and corporations. Sadly, none of the bands associated with Borde Room Entertainment could afford to pay for a slot at one of the SXSW venues in 2011 due to the high cost to perform. Even the admission fees were out of the musicians’ price range.
Additionally, they couldn’t help but notice that SXSW occurred at the same time as Spring Break which provided a conflict of interest for the bands because of the abundance of paying gigs along the coast for the Spring-time beach-goers, especially on South Padre Island. The Seabrook network wondered why Galveston didn’t offer any events for the Spring Breakers, especially with the proximity to Houston. They decided to do something about it.
Borde Room Entertainment took on the challenge of creating an event in Galveston that was free to the public, supported independent music and took place on the beach.

a) Team

The event would not have been possible without the impressive support from the community who was eager to do their part to help make this event a success. With a very small budget and less than two months to organize the event, Borde Room Entertainment quickly assembled a leadership team of volunteers who worked countless hours performing all of the necessary tasks to stage the event: Marc Borde, Natalie Hardin, Brandon Hardin, Ryan Beard, Kasey Hilburn and Charlie Danford.

b) Entertainment

Most of the bands and musicians contacted to perform at this new event were happy to perform in spite of no guaranteed payment. The system created by the leadership team was based on a share system of potential profit after all of the festival expenses were met. During the one-day event, over 40 bands and DJs performed a variety of genres on a total of seven stages.

c) Sponsors and vendors

Sponsors and vendors were happy to be a part of the free festival and their financial contributions covered most of the events expenses. There were 17 pre-registered sponsors/vendors, plus three more sponsors/vendors who signed up at the beginning of the event. In the end, there were 20 official sponsors/vendors. In addition, the community came together to help fill voids by donating, volunteering and sharing.

d) Schedule

The event took place on Sunday, March 20th, 2011, from noon – 11:00 p.m. There was an after-party at Rip Tide Surf Bar from 10:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m.

e) Financial

• Expenses

Expenses totaled approximately $27,000 for the one-day event. That number included all of the infrastructure (power, restrooms, security, medic, lights, etc.); stages and sound equipment; headliner and touring-band payment guarantees (totaling less than $1,000); advertising; signage; event merchandise; and beach fees.

• Revenue

(Note: The information below is provided from the perspective of Borde Room Entertainment and reflects revenue received per contracted agreements. This information represents ALL monies received by Borde Room Entertainment.)

Sponsors and Vendors $17,500
Venue entertainment fees 3,500
Alcohol sales 0
Parking 0
Event Merchandise 1,000

Total $22,000

• Profit (Loss)

Borde Room Entertainment covered the remaining $5,000 cost of expenses. This amount could be identified as a sponsorship or as a loss – depending on how you look at it. None of the Borde Room Entertainment leadership team members were paid, nor did any of the bands that played for shares of potential profit.

f) Attendance

Since the festival area was not enclosed with fences, it is hard to define the exact number of attendees. However, the Galveston Police Department took head-counts throughout the event. Their estimate was between 10,000 and 12,000 attendees throughout the day.

g) Summary

The 2011 Music Unity Freedom Festival was a great success. Even though there were large crowds of people partying on the beach, there were no arrests, fights or any other negative incidences. Most of the vendors were extremely satisfied with the results and displayed an interest in participating in the next event. Most of the bands were happy to be a part of this first-time event even though they were not paid. Feedback from the community about the event was great, with many claiming that it was the best event ever held in Galveston.

Borde Room Entertainment has been incorporating feedback from the community into planning for all future events. We believe this will help to improve the success of all future events.
